ROOIBOS TEA

 

Rooibos teas are a naturally sweet and sometimes nutty herbal tea made from the South African Red Bush and is often referred to as Red Tea or African Red Tea.One of the prime reasons that rooibos tea (also called "red tea" for its color) is gaining popularity quickly is because the tea's numerous health benefits.It has also gained much attention for clinical purposes in the case of nervous tension, allergies, dermatitis, and various digestive problems.

Rooibos is not like white tea or green tea, it doesn't come from the camellia sinesis plant.The rooibos tea processing method involves harvesting the red bush leaves, followed by grinding and bruising of the leaves. Then the rooibos is left to ferment and dried to yield a reddish brown needle-like tea. (Green rooibos is not fermented).

This tea is absolutely free from caffeine content and is also low in tannin. You can enjoy the relishing beverage all day long with no possible side effects.

  • Protection against cancer - The antioxidants in rooibos tea have been shown to increase the productivity of carcinogen-detoxifying enzymes, as well as protecting cell proteins, cell fats, and DNA. Honeybush wild harvest (Ref. 131)

The honeybush tea plant is easily recognized by its trifoliolate leaves and woody stems.It grows only in small areas in South Africa.Honeybush is so named because the flowers smell of honey and has a pleasant taste and flavour.Fermentated in a curing heap.Specially valuable for children and patients with digestive and heart problems where stimulants and tannins should be avoided.

Green rooibos tea (Ref. 132)

Researchers found that the green type of Rooibos had twice the amount of flavonoids and antioxidants than regular Rooibos.Once the thin needle-like leaves are harvested, they are broken, withered, and immediately steamed or baked. What this does is stop the fermentation process in the leaves which turns them the normal red color you see in regular Rooibos tea.

Taste: The taste is different from red rooibos. Instead of having the usual sweet nutty taste, the green type of Rooibos tea has more traditional green tea characteristics and is more light and vegetal in taste.
